Traditional retail, consisting mainly of ‘mom and pop’ stores, are earning about half the retail sales generated across Asia.

According to AC Nielsen, this fragmented yet ubiquitous traditional trade channel – which comprises more than five million outlets in Southeast Asia alone – is what is putting brands in front of more consumers, not modern retail.

In 2014, 47.9% of all retail sales were made through traditional retail channels, compared to 17.2% for supermarkets which accounts for the second-largest proportion of sales.
