While India’s domestic plastic packaging ban gets caught in the twilight zone of circular courtroom discussions, the Ministry of Environment has pushed through an import ban on PET bottles, plastic scrap and a range of waste items, including e-waste, brought into the country from overseas for recycling.

With the objective of jumpstarting a waste management culture by forcing better utilisation of waste generated internally, the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change issued a surprise order in late July, banning recycling companies from importing all forms of used plastic, PET bottles, flake or scrap instructing them to rely on waste generated within the country.
