More Indian companies have shifted to eco-friendly packaging in response to increasing consumer environmental awareness and preference for greener packaging, according to a recent study.

Conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), the study indicated that the sustainable packaging sector is growing at an average rate of 25% every year as against the 20% annual growth posted by the packaging industry as a whole.

Environmental issues such as worsening carbon emissions, the scarcity of natural resources along with the growing health awareness as well as waste reduction targets have prompted the growth of green packaging innovations, as revealed in the study titled “Domestic Green Packaging Industry Prepared.”

To better understand the impact and advantages of sustainable packaging on the Indian packaging industry, Assocham surveyed about 1,000 representatives from companies including the chairmen, managing directors, chief executives and directors of food and beverage companies, consumer packaged goods, shopkeepers, wholesalers and retailers in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

About 45% of manufacturers said they are slowly adopting the use of renewable packaging technologies and eco-friendly light materials as well as employing cost-effective methods to help boost consumer awareness.

In addition, 75% of the study’s respondents said they are gradually reducing the usage of what the study called “non-decomposable” plastic bags. They are also seeking the support of the grocery stores, vegetable and fruit vendors, hawkers, to promote the use of paper bags instead of plastics ones.
