New tougher excessive packaging law in Shanghai, Packaging, Asia, China, government
CHINA –
From 1 February 2013, Shanghai will enforce tighter regulations on excessive packaging.

At the 37th meeting of the Municipal People’s Congress on 21 November, the Shanghai government approved the ‘Shanghai Retail Packaging Reduction Provisions'.

The new law calls for packaging to “be reasonable and meet normal functional requirements” while ensuring that the packaging material, structure and cost as well as secondary packaging “should be adapted to reduce packaging waste generated.”

Manufacturers with products that are excessively packaged will be “blacklisted” and required to rectify the situation; those who do not do so will be fined as much as RMB50,000 (US$8,000).
