THAILAND – Major dairy producer Dairy Home has shifted to bioplastics for all its yoghurt packaging in Thailand.
Dairy Home is sourcing PLA bioplastics material from NatureWorks Asia Pacific, an affiliate of PTT Global Chemical. This low carbon Ingeo bioplastic yoghurt cup launch is the first of its kind in Thailand and Asia.
Established in 1999, Dairy Home is among the first organic dairy products in Thailand. In accordance with Dairy Home’s on environmental-friendly performance packaging, all its products have a certified reduced carbon footprint. The company sold about 2.5 million cups of organic yoghurt each year.
According to Pruitti Kerdchoochuen, Managing Director of Dairy Home, the company had been searching for “organic packaging” for a long while as it wanted to be able to offer both organic products and packaging.
It wasn’t until PTTGC and NatureWorks stepped in last year to help develop the bioplastics packages in collaboration with local plastic packaging company R&B Food Supply Ltd, that Dairy Home was able to introduce Ingeo bioplastic yoghurt cups.
“We are very confident of our collaboration with PTTGC and NatureWorks,” said Kerdchoochuen, noting that the new packaging will help reduce CO2 emissions and thus mitigating the impact of global warming.
Describing it as a big leap forward for Ingeo PLA, Viboon Pungprasert, General Manager of NatureWorks Asia Pacific Ltd, explained, “The CO2 savings we achieved for the partnership with Dairy Home organic yoghurt is equivalent to 87 tree seedlings being grown for 10 years.
“The adoption by Dairy Home proves that consumers everywhere desire to have a real choice that preserves the environment, meets their demand preferences, and most importantly, does not compromise on the packaging performance consumers have come to expect.”
Diary Home’s organic yoghurt in the new Ingeo based package design will be sold in supermarkets and retailed stores i.e. Jiffy, Max Value, Tops Supermarket, Gourmet Market, Lemon Farm, Villa Market, Foodland, Isetan, Big C and Lotus starting from end of August. Dairy Home’s organic yoghurt sale is around 2.5 million cups a year.
NatureWorks also supplies Ingeo PLA for yoghurt packaging to Danone in Germany, and Stonyfield in the US.
