SOUTH AFRICA –
Caturra Coffee is reinforcing its commitment to high quality standards and sustainability philosophy with a new packaging that uses compostable film.

South African coffee roasting specialist Caturra Coffee had sought advice from local distributor Natural Pack about making their packaging match their coffee ethics. Working in collaboration with local converter Colpak, new coffee packs were developed for Caturra coffee using Innovia Films’ NatureFlex renewable compostable films in their construction.

The coffee pack structure is made using three-layers, which comprises a printable, transparent barrier layer NatureFlex NK 20µm film on the outer layer, a metallised high barrier layer NatureFlex NKME 20µm in middle layer and a 50µm Bio-Polymer sealant layer which provides high seal strength and integrity. Mike Palos, Operations Manager of Caturra Coffee, said, “We are proud that Caturra is always first when it comes to being innovative as a leader in the coffee industry in South Africa. Our commitment is together with sustainable business practices to supply our coffee in environmentally friendly packaging.”Caturra Coffee enforces sustainability philosophy with compostable packaging, Caturra Coffee, Innovia Films, Colpak, Natural Pack

Natural Pack Managing Director John Fox added, “Once the coffee packs are made and printed by Colpak, Caturra fills and seals them with its gourmet coffee range sourced from exotic locations around the globe.

“These coffee packs offer good barrier to moisture and oxygen preserving the coffees distinctive aroma and taste and, also provides the shelf life that Caturra coffee requires. “

Certified to meet the American ASTM D6400, European EN13432 and Australian AS4736 standards for compostable packaging, the renewable biobased content of NatureFlex films is typically 95% by weight of material according to ASTM D6866. NatureFlex films offer advantages for packing and converting such as inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, high gloss and resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases, aromas and mineral oils, high barrier to moisture vapour and a wide heat-seal range. It is also easy to print and laminate.

Peter Van Belle, Area Sales Manager of Innovia Films, said, “NatureFlex Films are well suited for the coffee market because they fit well with concerns about sustainability and renewability. The environment continues to be high on the agenda in the packaging market, and coffee products that are certified by organisations such as Rainforest Alliance are a "good fit" with more sustainable packaging.”
