JAPAN – Suntory Beverage & Food Limited (SBF) is replacing its 16 µm (micrometer) roll labels for PET bottles made in Japan, currently the thinnest in the country, with an even thinner 12 µm label for its Suntory Minami-Alps Tennensui brand (2L and 550 ml PET bottles).
Since fall 2010, SBF – the food and beverage unit of Suntory Holdings Limited - has been working on initiatives aimed at further reducing environmental impact, including using an 18 µm label with 60% recycled PET resin. In May 2012, SBF further developed a 16 µm product label, the thinnest made in Japan, and increased the percentage of recycled PET resin content in the film from 60% to 80%.
This latest 12 µm label development is a further advancement in SBF’s sustainability efforts, with 25% less CO2 emissions than the existing roll labels.
The new label is being introduced this April for SBF’s mineral water brand Suntory Tennensui, and will soon be expanded to other products including Lyemon and Suntory Oolong Tea. SBF aims to replace all the roll labels used for its products with the new 12 µm label by the end of 2014.
In addition, SBF says it will be replacing the existing oil-based gravure printing for the roll label for Mineral Water Suntory Aso Tennensui (2L PET bottle) with water-based flexo printing in May 2014 – a move that will stop volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and also result in 79% less CO2 emissions per roll label.
