China renews food safety efforts

CHINA – The Chinese State Council has released a circular detailing its latest agenda against lax food safety standards.
According to the document, the Chinese government will renew efforts to root out “vile” practices leading to the distribution of substandard food products to consumers, and will overhaul food safety loopholes in planting, breeding, slaughter, production, distribution and catering, import and export.

INDONESIA – Several industries in Indonesia, including the beverage industry, could be adversely hit if a proposed minimum wage increase is not delayed, warned some government officials.
Last year, the Indonesian government decided to increase by 30-40% the 2013 minimum wage of those working in the beverage industry, which was found in 2008 to be around 20% lower than the national average for a person in the general manufacturing industry.

THAILAND - The Thai government plans to increase the space allocated to health warnings on cigarette packaging to 85% from its current 55%, in an effort to further curb smoking.
Although it is still being drafted, Public Health Minister Pradit Sintanawarong recently announced that the legislation will be implemented soon. This will make Thailand the country with the largest cigarette packaging health warnings in the world.

INDONESIA – The Indonesian government plans to impose a levy on carbonated soft drinks (CSD) to safeguard the health of its people.
According to the Finance Ministry fiscal agency interim head Bambang Brodjonegoro, the health concerns arising from the consumption of sweetened carbonated beverages are worrying.

HONG KONG – Echoing Australia’s plain cigarette packaging law, a proposed code for infant formula milk products in Hong Kong could see a complete ban on advertising and very strict limitations on marketing information allowed on product packaging and labels.
