CHINA - Shanghai Tobacco Package Printing Co’s investment in a new ten color offset press from Heidelberg is expected to increase the Chinese printer-converter’s productivity in UV and double coating printing by more than 30%.
The Speedmaster Ten Color press, which Heidelberg claims will be the longest offset press in China, has perfecting device, two coating units and two drying units.
With installation planned for September 2012, Shanghai Tobacco, which mainly produces cigarette packages, believes the investment will help its print shop be more flexible and better meet the increasingly exacting demands of customers.
The Chinese company is already equipped with six multi-color Heidelberg presses: the UV-capable, eight-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 with inline coating installed at the customer's site in 2006 is in use alongside Heidelberg CD 102 offset presses.
With the new 14-unit press, Shanghai Tobacco will be able to print the interior as well as the exterior of its products. The tobacco warning messages that appear on the packaging of cigarettes and other tobacco products concerning the health effects of those products are printed in at least four colors. With the additional spot colors, Shanghai Tobacco can meet all customer requirements.
The UV equipped Speedmaster XL 105 offers a wide range of advantages - premium gloss effects, unusual printing stocks such as laminated materials, films, or metallic surfaces, and fast postpress. DryStar, the UV dryer designed for the sheet travel of the Speedmaster XL 105 UV, is fully integrated into both the printing unit and delivery and the interdeck dryers can be moved freely from printing unit to printing unit without the need for tools, thus implementing "plug and print" and achieving maximum flexibility.
In addition, the double coating (LYYL) configuration can process conventional inks and give them a UV coating inline once a primer has been applied. A range of combinations is possible, including primers with metallic coatings, Iriodin, or functional coatings.
Both coating units boast extremely high register accuracy for delivering unique finishing quality. The new combination clamping bar enables use of both coating blankets and coating plates, thus offering maximum flexibility.
Founded in 1929, Shanghai Tobacco Packaging Printing - one of the leading enterprises in the packaging and printing industry in China and a subsidiary of the Shanghai Tobacco (Group) Corporation - has grown from a solely cigarette package printing company into a modern large-scale multi-functional packaging and printing enterprise, producing specialized design and packaging not only for tobacco, but also for food, medicine, health products, cosmetics, stationery and sports articles as well as daily chemicals.
Shanghai Tobacco Packaging Printing also manufactures for global consumer goods producers, among others for L'Oréal.
